Fate’s Revenge

Hecuba’s song (Part II)

Lyrics

I won. How I won.
I killed. And how I killed.
The darkest of all nightmares.
He prayed, he’d never seen the day!
No one could outguess what I did:
Scratch out the traitor’s eyes
Take all his boys
Wipe out the prick,
Who drowned my last,
my youngest son

Could you, could you now hate me?
Could you, could you now hate me?

Say, “no, mother, I don’t know, mother.
I’d just bow mother before the depth of pain
That you survived – to catch the culprits.”
And yet I could not. No one can.
And yet I could not. No one can.
And yet I could not. No one can.

About this song

Enslaved after the fall of Troy, Hecuba discovers that the man entrusted with protecting her youngest son has murdered the boy for gold. Faced with one final, unforgivable betrayal, she takes justice into her own hands, killing his sons and blinding him. The song does not celebrate revenge; it confronts the terrible price of grief when every boundary has already been crossed. Hecuba’s final act forces us to ask whether anyone can remain untouched by violence – or whether war ultimately transforms both victims and perpetrators.
